Surfactants are detergent substances consisting of hydrophilic (water-loving) and lipophilic (fat-loving) particles. They can combine fat and water. For this reason, surfactants play an important role in cosmetics: water alone cannot thoroughly cleanse the skin because it cannot detach sebum and greasy dirt particles from the skin.
Very strong, aggressive surfactants ("sulfates") not only remove sebum and dirt, but also the skin's natural oily layer, which is slow to regenerate.
